THE PREDICTION

This should be another thrilling edition of a finely-poised 6-6 head-to-head record between world number six Daniil Medvedev and number 14 Alexander Zverev. The pair have not played each other since Zverev beat Medvedev to the ATP Finals title back in November 2021 but the Russian had won five matches in a row before that, including in the group stages in Turin. If we consider that this current version of Daniil Medvedev really came to the fore in the summer of 2019, the former world number one leads a more reflective head-to-head 6-2 since beating Zverev in the Shanghai Masters final that season. Furthermore, the two do not meet at their respective peaks as 25-year-old is still coming back from a long injury lay-off after suffering a horrid ankle injury at Roland-Garros last summer. Both players looked to struggle with the slow conditions in the desert on Sunday, with Zverev overcoming Emil Ruusuvuori and Medvedev outlasting Ilya Ivashka in three sets apiece.

The conditions in Indian Wells certainly favour the German’s raw power but Medvedev takes a 16-match winning streak into this round of 16 clash that includes victories over Novak Djokovic, Andrey Rublev and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Away from Indian Wells the Russian could be backed to win in two at this moment in time but the conditions are likely to play their part, even if only mentally. Back Medvedev to win outright.
