THE PREDICTION

World number nine Danielle Collins beat Viktoriya Tomova in assured straight sets on Tuesday to get a promising Roland-Garros campaign underway. The 28-year-old finished runner-up to Ash Barty at the Australian Open back in January, her first Grand Slam final, and she has come almost as close in Paris after a stunning run to the quarter-finals here was ended by eventual runner-up Sofia Kenin. Collins won her first two WTA titles last season, back-to-back at the Palermo Open on clay and the Silicon Valley Classic on hard, which sets her apart from seasoned battler and compatriot Shelby Rogers. The 29-year-old has a seriously high ceiling on her day but as of yet no titles to her name, with a huge injury almost ending her career a few years ago.

Collins was the last player to face Ash Barty before the Aussie retired but Rogers was the last player to beat Barty, at last year’s US Open, to illustrate her ability. The two share a 1-1 head-to-head record but this is their first meeting on clay, on which Collins has the better recent form. Take Collins to win at least a set here and leave the winner up to chance in what could be a proper thriller.
