World number 63 Danielle Collins announced that this season would be her last as a professional tennis player last month and she has since played with an encouraging freedom that suggests it could be one of her best. The 30-year-old finished runner-up to Ash Barty at the 2022 Australian Open to set a career-high WTA world ranking of seventh but she has since struggled with fitness, and subsequently form, before deciding to call time on what has been a relatively brief but bright career. Victory over an out-of-sorts Veronika Kudermetova was expected on Sunday but the American has looked back to near her best in recent three-set defeats to the likes of Iga Swatek and Elena Rybakina and she should have enough to roll through to the round of 16 here.
World number 35 Marie Bouzkova overcame Sofia Kenin in three tight sets on Monday to improve on her recent performances, snapping a three-match losing streak, but the Czech is still far from her consistent best. Their only previous tour-level match went Bouzkova’s way in three sets but back Collins to level things with victory here.
