World number 59 Lorenzo Sonego is capable of a much better level than his current ranking suggests and he proved it on Thursday with a straight-sets victory over an ailing Dominic Thiem. The 27-yeatr-old’s main issue is consistency right now, with a recent win over Felix Auger-Aliassime further proof of what he can achieve when everything is firing at the same time but this looks set to be a tricky match for both players as he takes on world number 29 Dan Evans. 32-year-old Evans has struggled with form and fitness this season to bring a poor 3-8 record into Miami but he will be up for the challenge against Sonego in what looks set to be a really entertaining battle. Recent form suggests Sonego will come out on top, as he did in straight sets in their previous meeting at the 2020 Vienna Open, but taking the Italian to earn at least a set would be the sensible course of action in a match that looks likelier to see three than two.
