THE PREDICTION

This should be a thrilling clash between two players with the right sort of attitudes to make this a gladiatorial affair on Centre Court. Former number 21 Dan Evans found the form of his career late last season to win a first ATP 500 title in Washington but he has struggled terribly so far in 2024, following an injury that ended his season early in Tokyo last October. The 33-year-old, however, should thrive as the villain of this piece against a cult hero in these parts, Fognini, who in turn is well-used to playing the villain anywhere else on tour.

36-year-old Fognini is far from the player who won the Monte-Carlo Masters in 2019, setting a career-high ATP world ranking of ninth, but he is well capable of putting in a run for the baying home fans in Rome – just as he did last spring to beat Andy Murray and Miomir Kecmanovic to the third round. Evans won their only previous encounter in three sets in Dubai four years ago but the Brit’s 3-10 record and four-match losing streak suggests this will be an entertaining but short stay. Back Fognini to win outright.

TIP: FABIO FOGNINI TO WIN
