THE LOWDOWN
DANIEL EVANS
24th seed Dan Evans outclassed an out-of-sorts David Goffin in the first round of the Australian Open, handing the former world number 10 a bagel in the third set. 31-year-old Evans has started the 2022 season in imperious form, winning six of seven singles matches and two doubles matches alongside Jamie Murray at the ATP Cup. The British number two will return to a career-high ATO world ranking of 22nd no matter the outcome of this match.
ARTHUR RINDERKNECH
26-year-old Arthur Rinderknech overcame Aussie hopeful Alexei Popyrin in five sets on Tuesday to reach the second round of the Australian Open on his debut here in Melbourne. The world number 48 reached his first ATP tour final just last week at Adelaide 2 where he took the first set in an eventual defeat to Thanasi Kokkinakis.
THE PREDICTION
This match could go a few ways between two players in form, with Dan Evans’ blistering start to the Australian Open as much about his own excellent level in 2022 than it was about David Goffin’s continuing misery on tour. Rinderknech may be feeling it slightly after a full campaign last week and five sets already in this tournament but the Frenchman is well capable of snatching at least a set here with Evans occasionally prone to letting one slip in the longer format. Take the Brit to win outright here.
