World number 256 Dane Sweeny qualified without dropping a set to make his Master debut in Shanghai. The 22-year-old made the first round of the Zhuhai Championships last week before defeat to fellow Aussie Marc Polmans and he look set to struggle again in this tough opener against Taro Daniel. World number 96 Daniel is capable of much better tennis than his current ranking suggests but it is difficult to predict where and when his next run will come from. The 30-year-old has beaten a few in-form players like Aleksandar Vukic and Adrian Mannarino in recent months to look strong enough to avoid an upset here but an outright call is probably the wise concession.
