25-year-old Cristina Bucsa did not drop a set as the fourth seed in qualifying and she will set a new WTA world ranking of 100th on Monday for her trouble. The Spaniard won her first Grand Slam match at the fourth attempt in the first round of the US Open last season, upsetting Kaja Juvan in straight sets before a creditable defeat to Danielle Collins, and she looks the just-about favourite to come through this big opportunity for both qualifiers as she faces Eva Lys for the first time. World number 127 Lys also came through qualifying without dropping a set and the 21-year-old looks to have some real potential after excellent results on the ITF circuit late last season. The German is making her Grand Slam debut here in Melbourne and that lack of baggage could be her trump card in this first encounter with Bucsa.
