23-year-old Corentin Moutet comes into Melbourne at a career-high ATP world ranking of 51st after a brilliant few runs on the late hardcourt season. The Frenchman made the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time at the US Open, surprising in itself given his previous affinity with clay, beating Stan Wawrinka and Botic van de Zandschulp before a four-set defeat to eventual runner-up Casper Ruud and a round of 16 exit at the Paris Masters included brilliant wins over Cam Norrie and Borna Coric. World number 116 Yibing Wu lost to Moutet in the qualifying rounds of the US Open last season and that will likely boost Moutet’s confidence, which needs little boosting, ahead of this first tour-level meeting. The Chinese youngster, also 23, went on to reach the third round as a lucky loser in impressive circumstances and it would not be a surprise to see sets go both ways here. Moutet has not played a competitive match since Paris last November and that makes this a tricky match to call. Leave this one out of an accumulator but otherwise back Moutet to eventually come through.
