THE PREDICTION

World number 39 Roman Safiullin reached the semi-finals of the Aix-Provence Challenger last week to build-back some lost form but he still brings a three-match losing streak at tour level into Rome. The 26-year-old reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon last summer, beating Corentin Moutet in the second round, to prove himself of top 30 quality and he came agonisingly close to claiming his maiden ATP title at the Chengdu Open, just missing out to Alexander Zverev, before falling away from a peak.

World number 83 Moutet lost to Thiago Monteiro in qualifying but he is likely to be a tougher test on the second wind of a lucky loser in this first encounter between the two. The 25-year-old is on the long road back from a lengthy injury absence but consistent tennis has seen him steadily rise back up the rankings, although he will do well to avoid more four-hour first round thrillers after losing to Jerry Shang in madcap circumstances two weeks ago in Madrid. Moutet is the more comfortable in these clay conditions but both players are highly unpredictable. Back Safiullin to earn at least a set as the more dependable performer but leave this match far from any accumulators.

TIP: ROMAN SAFIULLIN TO WIN A SET
