THE PREDICTION

World number six Coco Gauff received a bye to the round of 16 at the Qatar Open as the fourth seed this week and this is a seriously tough first match back on tour since her exit to Jelena Ostapenko in the round of 16 at the Australian Open last month. A doubles win alongside Jessica Pegula on Monday should help settle some nerves but world number 13 Petra Kvitova has the benefit of an opening victory over Shuai Zhang on Tuesday to get her eye in and the former world number two has looked in great shape so far this year – apart from an early exit in Melbourne. A first meeting between the two leaves more questions than answers but Kvitova’s lefty backhand could prove too much for Gauff’s occasionally worrisome forehand and the Czech has enjoyed plenty of success in Doha, winning two titles here in 2018 and 2021 as well as finishing runner-up in 2020. Back Kvitova to edge things here or take her to earn at least a set inside an accumulator.
