THE PREDICTION
World number 12 Coco Gauff has been in searing form all summer long but she fell short against former world number one Simona Halep for a third time in a straight-sets defeat to the eventual Canada Masters champion in the quarter-finals last week. The 18-year-old beat Elena Rybakina, recent Wimbledon champion, and Aryna Sabalenka in two exhilarating three-set victories that befitted a player of huge top-level experience as she gets ever closer to breaking the top 10 for a first time and she has performed well enough so far to suggest she could be a serious title-contender at the US Open later this month. 24-year-old Marie Bouzkova will be a tough test, though, after also taking Rybakina to three in a defeat last week in Toronto. The Czech is up to a career-high WTA world ranking of 46th after winning her maiden WTA title at the Prague Open and she reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon before that in what is proving an excellent breakthrough season.
However, Gauff is at a different level. The American won the Canada Masters Women’s Doubles to exercise any disappointments from her singles campaign and she will be backed to the hilt all the way in Cincinnati. Take Gauff to win a potentially tricky opener outright but consider a one-off on her to win a first Masters title this weekend.
