THE LOWDOWN

CLARA TAUSON

19-year-old Clara Tauson announced herself to even more of the world stage on Thursday with a huge first top 10 victory over red-hot Anett Kontaveit in straight sets. Tauson already has two WTA titles to her name from Lyon and Luxembourg last season and after reaching the Australian Open third round on her debut she will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 32nd.

DANIELLE COLLINS

World number 30 Danielle Collins is yet to drop a set at the Australian Open after an assured performance against Ana Konjuh in Thursday. The 28-year-old won her first two WTA tour titles last season back-to-back at the Palermo Open and Silicon Valley Classic. Collins made a stunning run to the semi-finals here back in 2019 before losing to eventual runner-up Petra Kvitova.

THE PREDICTION

Collins was the winner in straight sets when she met an even younger Clara Tauson in the second round of Roland-Garros in 2020, when the Dane had not long turned pro. This time around the 19-year-old looks almost the finished article already, with the occasion suiting her in much the same way we have seen Emma Raducanu, Leylah Fernandez and Carlos Alcaraz take to the occasions. Collins has excellent pedigree here but Tauson is a serious threat to the top order and taking her to win at least a set looks sensible, leaving the winner up to chance.
