THE LOWDOWN

CLARA BUREL

20-year-old Clara Burel enjoyed a steady year on tour last season, setting a career-high WTA world ranking of 75th with finishing runner-up to Tamara Zidansek at the Lausanne Open a stand-out result. The Frenchwoman reached the third round on her Roland-Garros debut back in 2020 but she has not made it past the first round in two previous appearances here.

GARBINE MUGURUZA

World number three Garbine Muguruza ended the 2021 season as WTA Finals champion after a stunning campaign in Guadalajara. The two-time Grand Slam champion from Roland-Garros in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2017 enjoyed some of her best form in parts of last season but she will be disappointed with a loss to Daria Kasatkina in the quarter-finals of the Sydney Tennis Classic. 28-year-old Muguruza finished runner-up to Sofia Kenin at the Australian Open in 2020 and she should be considered a solid title contender this time around.

THE PREDICTION

While a defeat to Daria Kasatkina will be tough to take for Garbine Muguruza after the way she ended last season it could end up a blessing in disguise if it helps focus the Spaniard. The 28-year-old was a finalist here two years ago to underdog Sofia Kenin, with her defeat from a set down to Naomi Osaka in the round of 16 last year meaning she has led the last two champions in Melbourne before defeat. A first meeting with Clara Burel should be winnable enough here but the outright pick would be suitably cautious.
