28-year-old Christopher O’Connell set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 77th this week after a run to the quarter-finals of the Geneva Open, where he took the first set from Grigor Dimitrov before falling in three. The Aussie is enjoying the best form of his career so far this year and he recently claimed a career-best result over Alexander Zverev at the Munich Open on clay as part of a competitive 8-5 record on the surface coming into Paris. World number 112 Taro Daniel is one of the more unpredictable players on tour but the 30-year-old is capable of much better tennis than his current deflated ranking suggests, particularly at Grand Slams. Daniel has also stunned Zverev this season, on hardcourt at the Miami Open, but he has failed to win a tour-level match since. Three top 30 wins to O’Connell’s two suggests Daniel is the slight favourite here but back the Aussie to edge through with much better clay form behind him.
