THE PREDICTION

World number 175 Christopher O’Connell received a wildcard to the first round of the Australian Open and he has performed admirably here in the past few seasons. The 27-year-old Aussie will be well-backed by what is proving to be a rowdier tennis crowd than usual in Melbourne, with his victory over then world number 37 Jan-Lennard Struff at this stage last season an excellent benchmark. O’Connell took Tommy Paul and Gael Monfils to five sets at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon, respectively, before defeat last season and world number 67 Hugo Gaston is no stranger to a marathon himself. The 21-year-old Frenchman famously beat Stan Wawrinka in five sets at Roland-Garros in 2020 and then took Dominic Thiem to five before he lost in the round of 16. More recently, he produced a stunning run to the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters via tough wins over Pablo Carreno Busta and Carlos Alcaraz.

The Frenchman is yet to produce his best level outside of Paris, and the partisan crowd is likely to put the shoe on the other foot here, so take this match to see at least four sets if possible or for O’Connell to win at least two even if he loses.
