THE PREDICTION

Two young American up-and-comers meet on tour for the second time here and, remarkably, in Mexico after Caty McNally took their previous meeting in three sets at the Guadalajara Open back in 2021. Both players are set to break their respective career-high WTA world rankings this week regardless of the result, with McNally ranked slightly higher as things stand and ready to push inside the top 90 on tour for the first time. McNally grabbed a huge result on Monday to oust in-form third-seed Lin Zhu in three sets whilst Katie Volynets came back from a set down to knock out Lucia Bronzetti. Volynets only recently grabbed the biggest result of her career with a three-set upset over Veronika Kudermetova at the Australian Open this time last month but McNally’s victory over Lin was almost as surprising given the Chinese player’s recent form. Consider taking this head-scratcher to see three sets and leave the winner up to chance but otherwise back McNally to earn at least a set as the just-about likelier victor.
