World number 36 Aliaksandra Sasnovich last played three weeks ago in a disappointing quarter-final exit to Maryna Zanevska at the Hamburg Open but she returns to her favoured hard surface here. The 28-year-old started finding her feet on tour this time last season with a surprise run to the round of 16 at Indian Wells and she matched that run at the Miami Open earlier this year before falling away a little over the summer. Cincinnati native Caty McNally could have a fair chance at the upset here as a wildcard who will garner the full support of a strong crowd at the Western & Southern Open. The 20-year-old normally has more stock in the Women’s Doubles side of the draw but a one-off on the American to take the first set against Sasnovich, coming in cold from a clay tournament last month, could be one of the shrewder options in the first round.
