World number four Casper Ruud finished runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz here last season in what became a precursor for his 2022 as a whole. Whilst the Norwegian established himself as a top five player with some incredible consistency it was a season of near misses overall with four high-profile second places to Alcaraz here and the US Open, to Rafael Nadal at Roland-Garros and to Novak Djokovic at the ATP Finals. 24-year-old Ruud has started 2023 off poorly, perhaps understandably given the sheer amount of matches he played last season before essentially foregoing an off-season, but he has at least won the first match in each of his last three tournaments before early exits in the following rounds. World number 80 Ilya Ivashka could prove a serious challenge to that, though, after taking Daniil Medvedev to three sets in defeat at Indian Wells last week. The 29-year-old usually plays well on North American hardcourts as a former Winston-Salem champion and he set out his stall on Wednesday with a comfortable victory over Daniel Altmaier.
Leave this match out of an accumulator but considering Ruud’s poor start and the expectation on him to emulate last season’s run to the final it could be worth a one-off on Ivashka to cause the upset here. Otherwise, take the Belarussian to win at least a set and leave the victor up to chance in a first meeting between the two.
