THE LOWDOWN

23-year-old Casper Ruud reached his first two Grand Slam finals in this best season of his career so far, falling in straight sets to idol Rafael Nadal at Roland-Garros and in four sets in a much more competitive US Open final to Carlos Alcaraz. The Norwegian set a career-high ATP world ranking of second after the US Open but he has, perhaps understandably, struggled to match that intensity since to lose four of his last six matches.

22-year-old Felix Auger-Aliassime set a new career-high ATP world ranking of sixth last week after a run to the semi-finals of the Paris Masters was ended by eventual champion Holger Rune. The Canadian lost the first eight ATP tour finals of his rising career before claiming his maiden trophy at the Rotterdam Open back in February but he finally realised the levels he can reach with three-straight titles won in as many weeks at the Firenze Open, European Open and Swiss Indoors.

THE PREDICTION

This should be a fascinating start to the ATP Finals in Turin with Casper Ruud leading Felix Auger-Aliassime 2-1 in their head-to-head record but the Canadian looking the far more in form. 23-year-old Ruud has achieved a lot of things thought out of his reach this season but it has, ultimately, been a season of near misses with defeats in the three most prestigious finals of his 2022 and he should meet a new and improved version of Auger-Aliassime here. The Canadian produced a 16-match winning streak before defeat to red-hot Holger Rune last week and he will be desperate to make the most of this ATP Finals debut. Back the world number six to edge this outright, with memories of winning in Italy still fresh from Florence.
