THE PREDICTION

World number eight Casper Ruud received a bye to the round of 16 at the Estoril Open as the defending champion from last season, where he claimed the most recent of 10 ATP titles – nine of which have come on his favoured clay. The 25-year-old should be proud of his season so far, bringing an 18-5 record into Estoril after thoroughly improving his performance on hardcourts, and he looks the overwhelming favourite this week as perhaps the most consistent player on clay on the ATP tour – certainly at ATP 250 level.

World number 87 Botic van de Zandschulp holds an impressive 3-2 lead over Ruud in their head-to-head but he is currently eons away from the player who stunned Ruud in four sets at the US Open in 2021. The Dutchman overcame Federico Coria in three sets on Tuesday to get a foothold in at Estoril but he has failed to win back-to-back matches all season long. Ruud has won two of their last three matches, including on clay at Monte-Carlo last season, and he can be backed to come through in straight sets here.

TIP: CASPER RUUD TO WIN 2-0
