THE PREDICTION

World number five Caroline Garcia received a bye to the second round of the Dubai Masters as the fifth seed here but she could probably have done with a kinder first round opponent than Madison Keys, who has won each of their last three meetings to lead 3-1 in their head-to-head. World number 23 Keys conceded just two games to Jasmine Paolini on Sunday but maintaining that ruthless streak has not always proved easy for the American, whose last top 10 win came over Daria Kasatkina at the San Diego Open last October. 29-year-old Garcia ended last season as the WTA Finals champion but she has occasionally been caught short so far in 2023, with last week’s three-set defeat to Maria Sakkari at the Qatar Open the sort of battle she was winning last Autumn. Keys beat Garcia in straight sets at Roland-Garros last summer but since then the Frenchwoman has found a totally new level to her game. Back Garcia to earn at least a set as the likelier victor on form to leave this tough one up to chance.
