THE PREDICTION
This looked set to be the Monterrey Open final at the start of the week. World number five Caroline Garcia beat Elise Mertens in straight sets to make it to the final without dropping a set and she almost made it with a spotless record as she dropped her serve just once to Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in the round of 16. World number 31 Donna Vekic has endured a tougher time of it but the 26-year-old is clearly loving her tennis again on court under new coach Pam Shriver. A straight-sets victory over in-form Lin Zhu on Saturday was probably the best result of both players’ respective weeks and it is notable that Vekic leads their storied head-to-head 5-4 after winning three of their last four encounters on tour. Garcia, however, claimed victory in their only final together at the 2019 Nottingham Open and the Frenchwoman is renowned for her excellent record in finals despite losing the Lyon Open to Alycia Parks last month in surprising circumstances.
Vekic has won three of her 10 finals whilst Garcia has won 11 of her 14, including once over Vekic, and that makes siding with the top seed look the reasonable move here. Having said that, Vekic has claimed their last two meetings, both on outdoor hardcourts, to suggest the suitably cautious move would be taking Garcia to earn at least a set and leaving the victor up to chance in what could be a proper thriller.
