THE PREDICTION

25-year-old Caroline Dolehide will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 42nd after reaching her first ever tour final with a remarkable straight-sets result over a resurgent Sofia Kenin. The American had never reached a final anywhere before this week in Guadalajara but despite making full use of a weakened field at this underwhelming Masters event she has beaten some quality players in Kenin, Ekaterina Alexandrova and Martina Trevisan to earn her shot at glory. It does feel like fate has handed world number nine Maria Sakkari a much-needed break here, though, with the Greek through to her biggest final since finishing runner-up to Jessica Pegula here last season just three weeks after suggesting she may take a break from the sport to address a huge confidence issue on court. The 28-year-old conceded just three games to Caroline Garcia on Saturday in a totally atypical semi-final showing and she is yet to drop a set this week to look the solid favourite on form.

Sakkari has lost seven of her eight WTA finals on tour and Dolehide will be well aware of her opponent’s shoddy record at the deep end of tournaments. However, the Guadalajara crowd will probably get behind the Greek’s cause as she desperately seeks a title befitting her level these past few seasons and feeling like the stars have aligned should give her a boost in the key moments. Take Sakkari to win outright.
