THE PREDICTION

World number two Carlos Alcaraz made it five wins on the spin since his return from injury, beating Mateus Alves in straight sets on Tuesday to maintain momentum from his Argentina Open victory on Sunday. The 19-year-old is the defending champion here in Rio after beating Diego Schwartzman here last season in his first of five ATP titles claimed in 2023, with his last that memorable maiden Grand Slam trophy at the US Open. Alcaraz beat Fabio Fognini in straight sets in the semi-finals here last season and that deep run was the Italian’s last in singles, although he won the doubles alongside Simone Bolelli and went on to claim to further titles at Umag and last week in Buenos Aires. Fognini and Bolelli were upset in their Rio defence on Wednesday and it is unlikely that the 35-year-old will be able to handle Alcaraz any better than he did last season. Back Alcaraz to win in straight sets.
