THE LOWDOWN

CARLOS ALCARAZ

18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz beat Alejandro Tabilo in comprehensive straight sets on Monday to reach the second round of the Australian Open for a second time. The Spaniard will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 30th no matter the outcome of just this second match in Melbourne and a deep run looks on with breaking the top 10 by the US Open a genuinely achievable target.

DUSAN LAJOVIC

World number 39 Dusan Lajovic overcame Marton Fucsovics in a see-saw five-setter on Monday to put aside some early poor form this year. The 31-year-old set a career-high ATP world ranking of 23rd back in 2019 after reaching the Monte-Carlo Masters final on his favoured clay but he has struggled for form and confidence over the last few seasons.

THE PREDICTION

18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz ended last season as the Next Gen ATP Finals champion but it seemed odd that he came into the Australian Open cold without any warm-up events. The teenager soon put those questions to bed with a commanding performance in the first round and he will be well-backed as the future star here in a first career meeting with Dusan Lajovic. The Serb would have his fair share of the points on clay but Alcaraz’s performances on hard at the US Open suggest he can come through the outright winner here.
