THE PREDICTION
This could be a proper thriller on Thursday between three-time former champion Victoria Azarenka and Camila Giorgi, who is capable of anything. 33-year-old Azarenka claimed three of her seven Masters titles here in 2009, 2011 and 2016 – completing the Sunshine Double after also winning Indian Wells in 2016 – and she will throw everything she has into this campaign after recently blowing off some cobwebs to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open. World number 44 Camila Giorgi claimed her only Masters title in Montreal back in 2021 and she recently won her fourth WTA title at the Merida Open last month. The Italian squeaked through three tiebreaks in her opening clash with Kaia Kanepi to prove herself in reasonable shape, although 14 double faults is a huge concern ahead of facing former world number one Azarenka. Giorgi leads Azarenka 2-1 in their head-to-head record but the Belarussian is much-improved on recent years and the Miami crowd should back her as a popular former champion. Take Azarenka to edge this outright.
