THE PREDICTION

World number three Jessica Pegula proved herself the US number one for a reason two weeks ago with a remarkable run to the Canada Masters title, with victories over Coco Gauff and tour nemesis Iga Swiatek taking her to a second WTA Masters trophy. The 29-year-old looked a little exhausted, mentally and physically, in Cincinnati last week but she will come into the US Open as a dark horse for the title as one of the most consistent performers at this level since the start of 2021. Pegula has reached each of the last three quarter-finals at the Australian Open and the last eight once each at the other three majors since 2021, including last summer’s exit to eventual champion Swiatek here in New York. World number 52 Camila Giorgi reached the semi-finals of the Eastbourne International back in June but she has claimed just one win since, failing to even qualify for Cincinnati last week. This looks a very kind draw for Pegula, who has won each of their last five meetings to take an 8-2 lead in their head-to-head, so back the third seed to win outright. Straight-sets seems reasonable on current form but it is a risk, with five of their 10 matches seeing sets go both ways.
