World number 47 Brandon Nakashima will be one to watch this season after finishing last season as the Next Gen ATP Finals champion. The 21-year-old also claimed his maiden ATP title at the San Diego Open on home soil soon after a fabulous run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon, where he came as close as anybody not named Novak Djokovic to beating Nick Kyrgios in a five set defeat. A defeat to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at Adelaide 2 is poor preparation coming into the Australian Open but perhaps understandable in his first match back since the Next Gen Finals but this looks a potential thriller against fellow American Mackenzie McDonald. World number 63 McDonald takes a 2-2 record into Melbourne after some encouraging performances in Adelaide and he was the winner of their only previous encounter at the Cincinnati Masters in 2021. Both players are no strangers to long matches, and taking it to see five sets in a one-off looks a reasonable option here, but otherwise back Nakashima to earn at least two of them as the likelier of two capable winners.
