THE PREDICTION
World number 93 Brandon Nakashima won his maiden ATP title on hometown soil at the San Diego Open in 2022 but after promising so much after winning the Next Gen ATP Finals later that year he endured a horrid 2023, eventually falling off of the tour altogether. The 22-year-old worked tirelessly on the Challenger circuit to repair his game, and ranking, and it looked like hard work paying off on Wednesday when he beat Christopher Eubanks in straight sets to claim a first win at this level since early October.
World number 32 Jiri Lehecka twice lost to Nakashima at the Next Gen ATP Finals two years ago, in straight sets both in the group stages and in the final, but the Czech really pushed on from there – reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open last season before picking up his maiden title in Adelaide this January. A run to the quarter-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships last week saw an impressive victory over Karen Khachanov before he was forced to retire injured against Alexander Bublik and it remains to be seen how fit he is to play what promises to be a lengthy battle here. This match almost certainly means more to Nakashima in terms of pressure, looking for redemption on home soil, than it does Lehecka but the Czech is the favourite on recent form. Consider taking Nakashima to earn at least a set but the suitably cautious move is the same option in favour of the Lehecka.
