THE LOWDOWN
World number 49 Brandon Nakashima dropped two sets in his Next Gen ATP Finals opener against Matteo Arnaldi but he has not looked back since, beating both Jiri Lehecka and Francesco Passaro in straight sets to reach the semi-finals 3-0. 21-year-old Nakashima lost to fellow American Sebastian Korda at this stage of the tournament last season in five sets but he returned to Milan a wholly more experienced player with 30 wins on tour this season and a maiden ATP title claimed on home soil at the San Diego Open.
World number 41 Jack Draper was stunned by Dominic Stricker on his Next Gen ATP Finals debut on Tuesday but the 20-year-old has since vastly improved, beating Chun-hsin Tseng in four sets on Wednesday and then upsetting an exhausted-looking Lorenzo Musetti to usurp the home favourite into the last four. Draper has enjoyed an excellent breakthrough season on tour, coming from consistent Challenger success early this year to a career-best run to the quarter-finals of the Canada Masters in August.
THE PREDICTION
This looks set to be a lengthy, proper thriller late on Friday between two of the three pre-tournament favourites. 21-year-old Brandon Nakashima has been incredibly consistent on tour this season with few real blips in form and he came as close as anyone this summer to beating Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon, with a five-set defeat to the Aussie in the round of 16 by far his best run to date. Jack Draper can look forward to a full tour season in 2023 after spending the first half of this year ripping up the Challenger circuit but he has, notably, beaten three of the eight players at the outright ATP Finals this year: Taylor Fritz, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Five sets should suit the steadier Nakashima in this first encounter with Draper but the Brit proved on Thursday that he can nip this in the bud with a ferocious start. Nakashima’s perfect record in Milan so far suggests taking him to win at least two sets is the sensible way to avoid picking a winner from this tough call.
