World number six Andrey Rublev is the defending Dubai Tennis Championships champion here and he came perilously close to dropping out in the round of 16 after coming back from a set down to edge past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina via two tiebreaks. The 25-year-old recently reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open to suggest he is playing fairly well but it is difficult to see him ever getting back to the peak of his powers in 2020 when he went on several streaks at this level as the clear and present ‘best-of-the-rest’. World number 33 Botic van de Zandschulp also came back from a set down on Wednesday to oust Mikael Ymer, backing up an excellent win over in-form Karen Khachanov on Tuesday. The Dutchman beat Rublev in straight sets in their only previous meeting at the St. Petersburg Open back in 2021 but three sets seem likelier than two here and the Russian has to be favoured after his comeback by the tightest margins. Back Rublev to win outright or risk the total of three sets option as a one-off.
