THE PREDICTION

Former world number seven Richard Gasquet won the 16th ATP title of his long and illustrious career at the Auckland Open back in January, coming back from a set down to beat Cam Norrie. The 36-year-old has since lost four of six matches on tour but a three-set victory over Pablo Carreno Busta at the Rotterdam Open was proof of what he is capable here. Gasquet has finished runner-up at three Masters events: in Hamburg back in 2005 and Canada twice in 2006 and later in 2012 and nine of his 16 titles have come on hardcourts over the years. 25-year-old Borna Gojo is a hard man to count out, though, after qualifying well this week to make his Masters debut. The Croat has won all four of his tour-level matches this season after once again playing the hero on international duty, winning three matches at the United Cup and defeating Dominic Thiem in the Davis Cup group qualifiers. Strong work at Challenger level suggests Gojo is almost ready to make the jump to tour life but back Gasquet to edge this first meeting between the two.
