THE PREDICTION

28-year-old Bernarda Pera will break the top 40 on tour for the first time after coming back from a set down to fantastically beat 12th-seed Liudmila Samsonova for a career-best ranking result. The American has spent much of her career out of the spotlight but hopefully the Indian Wells home fans will turn out in force for this excellent opportunity, for both players, to reach the round of 16. Former world number 21 Sorana Cirstea was in control against Madison Keys before the 19th seed was forced to retire from their match injured but it remains to be seen just how well she is playing after a kind opener against Kimberly Birrell. The Romanian upset Beatriz Haddad-Maia in one of the longest matches of the season in Dubai two weeks ago and then lost competitively to Karolina Muchova to suggest this will be a tight match on Monday but back Pera to earn at least a set with home advantage behind her and leave the victor up to chance.
