28-year-old Bernarda Pera set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 37th this week after a strong run to the third round at Indian Wells, including a remarkable comeback over 12th-seed Liudmila Samsonova via two tight tiebreaks. The American changed the course of her career last summer by winning her first two WTA titles back-to-back on clay and it will be fascinating to see what she can do on the incoming swing. A deep run in Miami is pretty unlikely but Pera should be able to beat world number 369 Evgeniya Rodina in this first meeting between the two, despite the Russian’s eye-catching result over Alize Cornet at this stage of Indian Wells. The 34-year-old is on her second comeback from retirement and something of an anomaly in the draw, so backing Pera to win outright would be the suitably cautious move here.
