World number seven Coco Gauff was at her battling best towards the end of an exciting straight-sets victory over 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu on Wednesday. The 18-year-old is riding a seven-match winning streak after claiming her third WTA title at the Auckland Classic at the start of the season and she started a promising Women’s Doubles campaign off with a win alongside Jessica Pegula on Thursday. Gauff finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek in her maiden Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros last summer in another best-yet season that saw her qualify for both singles and doubles at the WTA Finals.
THE PREDICTION
28-year-old Bernarda Pera should break the top 40 on tour for the first time after making the third round at a Grand Slam for only the second time in her career, stunning rising star Qinwen Zheng in straight sets on Wednesday. The American changed the course of her career last summer by winning her first two titles back-to-back on clay but despite enjoying her best Grand Slam results here in Melbourne this looks like one step too far this year. Gauff set a career-high WTA world ranking of fourth late last season and it would not be a huge surprise to see her end 2023 as world number one as the fast-developing rival Iga Swiatek is missing at the top of the sport.
