26-year-old Bernabe Zapata Miralles set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 42nd last week after an impressive South American swing saw him reach back-to-back semi-finals in Buenos Aires and Rio, losing to respective eventual champions Carlos Alcaraz and Cam Norrie. It will be difficult for the Spaniard to take that sort of form into hardcourt conditions but confidence will be sky-high here and his opponent remains something of an anomaly right now. World number 77 Ugo Humbert was a clear rising star this time two years ago but he suffered a horrendous season last year, due in no small part to suffering from covid-19 complications early-on.
