THE PREDICTION

This promises to be one of the most exciting matches of the round between two youngsters destined to challenge at the top of the sport for many years to come. 18-year-old Jakub Mensik will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 69th after beating Seong-chan Hong in straight sets on his Indian Wells debut and that result is all the more encouraging after he was forced to retire injured from a round of 16 clash with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in Dubai last month. The teenager produced a stunning run to his first tour final at the Qatar Open the week before, stunning the likes of Andrey Rublev and Andy Murray en-route, but tight defeats to both Karen Khachanov in that Doha final and in five sets to Hubert Hurkacz at the Australian Open are just as impressive.

World number 16 Ben Shelton reached the semi-finals of the US Open last summer, showing up strong in a four-set exit to eventual champion Novak Djokovic, but the 21-year-old still has a lot of maturing to do in the sport. A choppy start to 2024 certainly suggests there are weaknesses for Mensik to exploit in this first of likely many meetings between the two but home advantage on a huge stage should help the American edge through this time. Three sets seem likelier than two, so consider backing Shelton to win in three if not outright.

TIP: BEN SHELTON TO WIN 2-1
