THE PREDICTION

This will be a fascinating clash between two players who ended 2023 with some of the best results of their respective careers before enduring concerning starts to 2024. 27-year-old Haddad-Maia reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last summer, displaying her efficacy on clay, and she ended 2023 as the WTA Elite Trophy champion in singles and doubles – partnering with Veronika Kudermetova in the latter.

World number 19 Kudermetova won her maiden WTA title in Charleston, albeit at the WTA 250 event, in 2021 but she beat that achievement with a WTA 500 title claimed in Tokyo last October. The Russian beat Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula to the trophy that week but she has barely scraped a win on tour since, with victory over Shelby Rogers on Wednesday a slight encouragement. Kudermetova beat Haddad-Maia in three sets, coming back from a set down, en-route to her Tokyo title but this rematch on clay should better-suit the Brazilian. Back Haddad-Maia to earn at least a set or consider three here between players not unaccustomed to a lengthy battle.

TIP: BEATRIZ HADDAD-MAIA TO WIN A SET
