World number six Maria Sakkari has conceded just nine games so far at the Madrid Open to look a serious contender this week, coasting past Donna Vekic and in-form Sloane Stephens. The 28-year-ol’d confidence is sky-rocketing after a drab two-year period of concerning meltdowns on court but this will be a big test of her rediscovered steel against a resurgent Beatriz Haddad-Maia, who leads their head-to-head 2-0 at tour level.
World number 14 Haddad-Maia is also through to the round of 16 without dropping a set, stringing together two wins in a row for the first time since early February after a poor run of form.
