World number four Jessica Pegula played well when it counted on Wednesday to overcome a tough deficit in the third set to beat Jelena Ostapenko. The second seed in Doha looked in good shape in her first match back since losing a third-successive Australian Open quarter-final last month and she is also through to the semi-finals in the doubles alongside fellow top seed Coco Gauff. This should be a tough test against in-form Beatriz Haddad-Maia, though, as the Brazilian is yet to drop a set in Doha with two eye-catching victories over Paula Badosa and Daria Kasatkina. 26-year-old Haddad-Maia set a career-high WTA world ranking of 12th this week after making the semi-finals in Abu Dhabi last week, beating Melbourne finalist Elena Rybakina in the process. A first meeting with Pegula in these conditions is likely to better-suit the American but Haddad-Maia must not be underestimated in this form. Back Pegula to earn at least a set inside an accumulator or take the match outright on its own.
