THE PREDICTION
27-year-old Barbora Krejcikova set a career-high WTA world ranking of second last February with ranking points built mostly from her stunning run to the Roland-Garros title in 2021. The Czech started out life on tour as more of a doubles specialist alongside compatriot Katerina Siniakova, alongside whom she has won 13 WTA Doubles titles including six Grand Slams, and the pair will be gearing up to defend their Australian Open title from last season alongside singles campaigns. Krejcikova made the quarter-finals in the singles here last season before a straight-sets defeat to Madison Keys and will be a serious threat to any player once again this year. This is a fairly kind opener against fellow Czech Sara Bejlek but the 16-year-old should not be underestimated after knocking out the top seed in qualifying, Alycia Parks, to make her Australian Open debut. World number 175 Bejlek will be one to watch this season after finding success on the ITF circuit last year but Krejcikova should take a good-natured first meeting with her junior in straight sets.
