THE PREDICTION
This could be a thrilling first encounter between world number 18 Barbora Krejcikova and Chinese number one Qinwen Zheng, who will be backed to the hilt by a partisan atmosphere in Zhengzhou. The 21-year-old won Gold at the Asian Games three weeks ago but she was unfortunate to draw Elena Rybakina in the first round of the China Open soon after. The Chinese won her maiden WTA title at the Palermo Ladies Open back in July but this WTA 500 title would eclipse that feat, particularly on home soil. Former number two Krejcikova has played just five sets this week after coasting past Daria Kasatkina and she is through to a second-successive WTA 500 final after winning her second title of 2023 at the San Diego Open last month. The Czech has won seven of her 11 tour finals, including Roland-Garros two years ago, to bring heaps of experience into this tight clash but Qinwen Zheng should thrive under the pressure of playing for her nation. The sensible call is taking Krejcikova to earn at least a set as the just-about likelier victor but a three-set comeback for Zheng would not be a surprise.
