THE LOWDOWN

BARBORA KREJCIKOVA

World number four Barbora Krejcikova made the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for the first time after a stunning display against two-time former champion Victoria Azarenka. The 25-year-old looked several levels better than her previous win over Jelena Ostapenko as she played with the same intensity that won her three titles over last summer, including the Roland-Garros title. Krejcikova also won the Doubles event at Roland-Garros alongside Katerina Siniakova and she could well do the double again here this weekend with the pair into the quarter-finals too.

MADISON KEYS

World number 51 Madison Keys was exceptional against an out-of-sorts Paula Badosa to provide one of the biggest shocks of the tournament so far. The 26-year-old was unplayable at times, breaking the in-form Spaniard’s serve on five occasions to reach the quarter-finals in Melbourne for the third time. Keys won Adelaide 2 before the Australian Open for a now nine-match winning streak as she aims to go one better than her runner-up trophy to Sloane Stephens at the US Open back in 2017.

THE PREDICTION

This quarter-final looked like it would be a repeat of the Indian Wells final between two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka and in-form Paula Badosa but instead we have the first meeting of two women who provided the upsets on Sunday. In Krejcikova’s case it was less of an upset, more of a sudden extra gear found against Azarenka but despite how well Keys has played in Melbourne, Badosa looked like going all the way to meet Ash Barty. This should be a thriller on Monday but the winner could come from anywhere. In the likelihood that it takes a decider, opting for Krejcikova to win at least a set is the sensible move and for a total of three sets the slightly riskier one. It would not be a surprise to see a joyful Madison Keys win the entire tournament.
