THE LOWDOWN
BARBORA KREJCIKOVA
2021 Roland-Garros champion Barbora Krejcikova has conceded just seven games so far in two straight-set victories over Andrea Petkovic and Xiyu Wang. The 26-year-old’s last defeat to a player ranked outside the top 20 came last April to Ana Bogdan at the Istanbul Open but in that time she has won three WTA titles, including the French Open, and qualified for the WTA Finals. The Czech won the Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles event here last season alongside Katerina Siniakova and Rajeev Ram, respectively.
JELENA OSTAPENKO
2017 Roland-Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko has twice come back from a set down to win in two tough matches against Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova and Alison Riske. The 24-year-old won the WTA 500 Eastbourne International last season for a first title in two years and she also finished runner-up to Clara Tauson at the Luxembourg Open. The former world number five is yet to reach the round of 16 at a hardcourt Grand Slam.
THE PREDICTION
Krejcikova won the only tour-level meeting between these two Roland-Garros champions almost a year ago at the Dubai Open, just as her scintillating form singles form was starting to take shape. The Czech’s stunning 2021 season looks like just the beginning with only the very top players able to oust her for the best part of a year and she knows how to win titles on Rod Laver Arena having claimed both Doubles variants last season. Ostapenko is always an anomaly capable of upsetting the norm but on this occasion Krejcikova should be able to weather the Latvian’s storms for an outright win.
