THE PREDICTION

World number 38 Aslan Karatsev started 2022 on fire with a third ATP title won at the Sydney Tennis Classic but the Russian appears to have run out of steam since, with a 14/20 record for the season after a fourth-straight defeat at the Canada Masters this week. That leaves the door open for 20-year-old Brandon Nakashima to excite the home crowd in Cincinnati as one of the more in-form Americans on tour right now. The current world number 63 would be well inside the top 40 after reaching the round of 16 at Wimbledon last month, losing out in a five-set epic to eventual runner-up Nick Kyrgios, but he reacted well to the controversial lack of points with back-to-back quarter-finals reached at the Atlanta Open and Los Cabos Open. A first meeting with Karatsev would normally be a serious test, with the Russian’s unorthodox playstyle tough to acclimatise to, but backing the youngster to win at least a set as the likelier victor here seems the sensible call.
