THE LOWDOWN
World number one Aryna Sabalenka struggled with the conditions in Cancun in a straight-sets defeat to Jessica Pegula, making this a straight-up shoot-out for the semi-finals against Elena Rybakina. 25-year-old Sabalenka came back from a set down to beat Rybakina to the Australian Open title in January and the Belarussian has reached at least the semi-finals at all four majors this season, most recently finishing runner-up to Coco Gauff at the US Open. Sabalenka also won her fourth Masters title at the Madrid Open back in April, taking her career total of WTA titles to 13.
World number four Elena Rybakina overcame a strong fight back by Maria Sakkari in three sets on Tuesday to improve on her opening defeat to Jessica Pegula. The 24-year-old’s WTA Finals debut was well overdue after she won her maiden Grand Slam title at Wimbledon last summer, with a lack of ranking points at SW19 that summer seeing her cruelly miss out. Rybakina has endured a tough second-half of the year thanks to a series of fitness issues, and occasionally scheduling concerns, but she did enough to make the last eight by earning her first two Masters titles in Indian Wells and Rome alongside finishing runner-up to Sabalenka in Melbourne.
THE PREDICTION
This will be a fascinating seventh clash between Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina, with the Kazakh winning each of their last two clashes since defeat in Melbourne. Sabalenka leads their head-to-head 4-2 but, notably, Rybakina has earned at least a set in all six of their matches so far, winning the last two in straight sets to win the Indian Wells title and more recently reach the semi-finals in Beijing. That, and Sabalenka’s struggles with the conditions this week, suggests backing Rybakina to cause a real shockwave in Cancun is the shrewd move here but otherwise take the world number four to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
