World number 24 Roberto Bautista Agut received a bye to the round of 16 at the Montpellier Open as the fourth seed here and he could take a little warming up given his last match came two weeks ago in a four-set loss to Tommy Paul at the Australian Open. The 34-year-old endured some tough battle sin Melbourne, not least a four-hour epic against Andy Murray in the third round, that looked to have gotten the better of him by the round of 16 but before that he finished runner-up to Soonwoo Kwon at Adelaide 2 to suggest he is a title contender here. This is no gimme, though, given his lack of recent matches as 18-year-old Arthur Fils will be backed to a hilt after stunning Richard Gasquet in the first round on Monday. The Frenchman set a career-high ATP world ranking of 163rd this week after qualifying and he will smash that no matter the outcome now after claiming the first tour-level win of his career. RBA is one of the more unshakeable players on tour, though, so backing the Spaniard to win outright looks the suitably cautious pick here with three sets a distinct possibility.
