THE PREDICTION
World number 37 Arthur Fils has struggled to get his 2024 campaign going so far, perhaps due to his shock defeat to Hamad Medjedovic in the Next Gen ATP Finals last November, but a straight-sets win over Joao Sousa on Wednesday was a solid start at Estoril. The 19-year-old won his maiden ATP title at the Lyon Open on clay last season but he impressed across surfaces for the majority of the season, finishing runner-up to Alexander Bublik at the Antwerp Open late last season on indoor hardcourts.
Former number 17 Cristian Garin remains one of the ATP tour’s great mysteries. The 27-year-old has plenty of time to return to form but it looks increasingly out of reach for the current world number 112. Garin claimed just one tour-level win on clay across the South American swing but he added a second with victory over Jurij Rodionov on Monday to suggest he is paying attention this week in Estoril. This will be a robust and likely thrilling encounter if both players bring their best but back Fils to come through the eventual winner.
