THE PREDICTION
This should be an entertaining scrap between world number 10 Jelena Ostapenko and Anna Kalinskaya, who will set a career-high WTA world ranking of around 22nd after blasting past Xiyu Wang. 25-year-old Kalinskaya has enjoyed a brilliant start to 2024, reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in January and finishing runner-up to Jasmine Paolini at the Dubai Masters last month, but there is a fleeting sense of opportunities missed given the Russian beat Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff and Ostapenko en-route to that final. 26-year-old Ostapenko will be vehemently determined to avenge that defeat here as she aims to get back to her initial flying form this season. The Latvian reached a final, in either singles or doubles, in each of her first four tournaments this season to lift trophies in Adelaide and Linz but recent early defeats to Kalinskaya and Angelique Kerber say that she has leaked some intensity since early February.
